Health and Safety policy

Man and Van Stockwell Health and Safety Policy

Man and Van Stockwell is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and delivery operations. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with moving, transporting and handling goods as part of our man and van services.

Policy Statement and Objectives

Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health, damage to property and disruption to our services by identifying and controlling hazards in a systematic way. Health and safety considerations are integral to the planning and delivery of each removal, whether it involves domestic moves, office moves, single-item deliveries or larger transport projects within our service area.

We aim to continually improve our health and safety performance by monitoring our activities, reviewing incidents and learning from experience. This policy is reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry practice and the nature of our operations.

Roles and Responsibilities

Management is responsible for providing clear health and safety leadership. This includes allocating appropriate resources, setting standards, conducting risk assessments and ensuring that safe systems of work are implemented and followed.

Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for communicating health and safety requirements to staff on each job, ensuring that all operatives use the correct equipment and follow agreed procedures for lifting, loading, driving and unloading.

All employees and contractors have a duty to take reasonable care of their own safety and the safety of others. They must co-operate with management, follow training and instructions, use equipment correctly, report hazards, near-misses and incidents, and not engage in unsafe behaviour.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Before each removal or delivery job, we consider the specific risks associated with the property, access routes, items being moved, parking arrangements and traffic conditions. Where necessary, a formal risk assessment is carried out and recorded. Typical hazards include manual handling, slips and trips, falls from height when loading vehicles, moving heavy or awkward items and driving-related risks.

We put in place safe systems of work designed to minimise these risks. These may include planning the sequence of work, designating safe routes through properties, using appropriate lifting equipment or trolleys, and assigning sufficient staff to handle heavy or bulky items. Staff are expected to follow these systems and raise any concerns if they believe a task cannot be carried out safely.

Manual Handling and Use of Equipment

Manual handling is a significant part of our removal activities. We provide guidance and training on correct lifting techniques, team lifting, use of mechanical aids and recognition of personal limits. No employee is required or permitted to lift or carry loads that could cause injury.

Suitable equipment such as sack trucks, dollies, ramps, straps and protective materials is provided where necessary. All equipment is to be inspected regularly and removed from service if damaged or unsafe. Staff are trained in the safe use of this equipment and must not improvise with unsuitable tools or methods.

Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards

Our vehicles are fundamental to our man and van services and must be operated safely at all times. Vehicles are inspected and maintained to ensure they are roadworthy and fit for purpose. Drivers must hold the appropriate licence, follow road traffic laws and operate vehicles courteously and responsibly.

Loads are to be distributed evenly, secured using appropriate straps and restraints, and checked before departure. Overloading is strictly prohibited. Drivers must not use mobile phones while driving unless using legally permitted hands-free systems and must not drive while under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any medication that may impair their ability to drive safely.

Customer Premises and Public Safety

When working at customer premises, our teams are required to respect the property and ensure that their activities do not put occupants, visitors or neighbours at risk. This includes keeping walkways clear, controlling trailing cables, using warning signs when necessary and managing access to areas where work is in progress.

We take care to minimise disruption in communal areas, on streets and in shared driveways. Where vehicles need to be loaded or unloaded from the roadside, staff should use safe parking locations where possible and remain alert to passing traffic, cyclists and pedestrians.

Training, Information and Supervision

All staff receive appropriate induction and ongoing training relevant to their role, including manual handling, safe loading, use of equipment, basic vehicle safety and emergency procedures. Additional job-specific instruction is given when required, for example when handling specialist items or operating particular equipment.

Supervision is provided proportionate to the complexity and risk of the job. Less experienced staff are closely supported and monitored until they demonstrate the competence and judgement required to work more independently.

Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents and near-misses must be reported as soon as reasonably practicable so that they can be recorded, investigated and used to prevent recurrence. We encourage open reporting and do not tolerate victimisation of anyone who raises a genuine safety concern.

Basic first aid provisions are available in our vehicles or at our operating base. Staff are briefed on what to do in the event of injury, fire, road traffic collision or other emergencies, including contacting emergency services and making the area safe where possible.

Health, Welfare and Fitness for Work

We recognise the physical demands of removal work and aim to protect the health and welfare of our staff. Employees are encouraged to maintain good physical fitness, use correct lifting techniques and take regular breaks. Any employee who feels unfit for work, including due to illness, fatigue or the effects of medication, must inform management before undertaking driving or manual handling tasks.

We do not tolerate the use of drugs or alcohol during working hours or immediately before work where this could affect safety. Where health issues are disclosed, we will seek to make reasonable adjustments, where practicable, to enable staff to work safely.

Continuous Improvement and Policy Review

This Health and Safety Policy is communicated to all employees and is available to customers on request. It is reviewed at regular intervals and following any significant change to our operations or relevant legislation. We welcome feedback from staff and customers that may help us improve our approach to safety in our man and van and removal services.
